Mission

Liquid Architecture is a community-founded, artist-first organisation that exists to explore sonic relationships and practices on the radical edges of sound and listening.

Founded in 1999, in Naarm/Birrarungga (Melbourne), we engage with our local neighbourhoods in the region, First Nations lands and cultures, as well as being part of international dialogues and communities.

We support artists, musicians, performers and creative practitioners—whether they are sonic luminaries or emerging artists—to make vital works, presented in exceptional locations and circumstances.

Liquid Architecture events are a meeting place for people who value sound and listening as a way to explore ideas, shift perspectives and make connections.

On Community

Liquid Architecture’s community is made up of artists, musicians, practitioners, academics, arts workers, volunteers, audiences and partner organisations, in Naarm/Birrarungga (Melbourne), across ‘so-called Australia’ and around the world.

It is an intergenerational, intercultural community, propelled by both younger generations and our seniors, and emerging and established artists who work with sound and listening.

Like everything Liquid Architecture does, this is an experiment, driven by exploring and breaking down barriers. Grit, collaboration and connection will get us there.

On Sound & Listening

For sound that exists at the radical edges of practice to make space for new approaches — used to explore worlds, unpack ideas, share messages and present shifting perspectives.

For listening that brings vital ideas and voices into focus, searching beyond the mainstream to explore new ways of experiencing and analysing — provoking growth and change.

Underpinned by an artist-first, community-driven approach, that forms communities and welcomes emerging and established artists and audiences of all levels, generations and backgrounds.

Our Program

Play our valuable role in international sound and listening communities.

Enable progression through active experimentation and failure.

Contribute to local communities, especially inter-generations, through sound and listening.

Amplify global majority voices.

Sustainably support First Nations practitioners and audiences.

Apply

Liquid Architecture is seeking expressions of interest for the voluntary role of Chair of the Board. The Chair plays a central leadership role in supporting the organisation’s strategic direction, governance, and sustainability, working closely with the Board, Directors, and staff.

Liquid Architecture is an Australian organisation dedicated to experimental sound, listening practices, and sonic culture. Since its establishment in 2000, Liquid Architecture has supported artists, researchers, and audiences to engage with sound as a critical, social, and artistic practice.

Liquid Architecture is based on Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country, at the Collingwood Yards contemporary art precinct. The organisation operates across commissioning, publishing, events, residencies, and research-led programs, with a strong commitment to experimental practice, critical discourse, and artist-led inquiry. Liquid Architecture works nationally and internationally, fostering conversations across music, sound art, technology, performance, and cultural theory.

We are looking for an experienced and dynamic cultural leader with governance experience, a commitment to contemporary arts and culture, and an interest in experimental sound and interdisciplinary practice. As of January, the organisation has appointed two Co-Directors, and are seeking someone who can steward our refreshed leadership structure with an enthusiastic board.
